Electric Vehicle (EV) Mode & Power Mode
Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive® - full hybrid technology that can operate in petrol and electric mode. The Toyota Prius chooses seamlessly between sources to consistently deliver maximum performance and efficiency at every stage of your drive.
Unlike anything on the road today, the main electric motor can power the car on electricity alone at up to 48km/h (EV-Mode) for up to 2km, making the Prius the most advanced and radically fuel-efficient car in the world.
The high-power electric motor requires less output from the petrol engine providing further economies in fuel and CO2 emissions.
Stop & Start Technology
The Stop & Start feature lowers fuel consumption even further by switching off the petrol engine when stopping. At standstill the car releases zero emissions and provides a noticeable silence.
Using the electric motor to start the car, ensures a faster and smoother restart.
1.8 litre Atkinson Cycle Engine
A new and exclusive 4-cylinder, 1.8 litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine generates 98 DIN hp at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm.
This new exceptional engine delivers higher torque at lower revolutions - a reduction of 300 rpm at 120 km/h- combining quieter running with a 10% improvement in long distance cruising fuel economy.
Using the Atkinson cycle petrol engine is maximised for operating efficiency and additionally supported by the electric motor for optimized power output.
High Energy Battery
Developed through proven and reliable NiMH technology, the new compact battery delivers higher energy output (27 kW) and a larger capacity than any other hybrid system. Energy recovery is maximised by a high performance integrated cooling system.
A new 37% more compact inverter has faster switching for improved efficiency, and now converts the battery's direct current into a higher, 650 volt (+150 volt) alternating current to drive the electric motor and, occasionally, the generator.
Transmission & Eco-Mode
Electronically controlled continuously variable transmission allows you to drive at the most efficient engine speed.
In addition to normal driving mode, you can also enhance the power and efficiency of your drive by choosing from EV , Eco, and Power modes.
Select Eco mode to lower engine power output and air-condition performance for enhanced fuel economy.
Depending on driving conditions, the ECO mode can help drivers achieve a 10% -15% reduction in fuel consumption.
Electricity Generation & Regeneration
The high-power battery recharges during deceleration and braking with the electric motor acting as a high-output generator. Energy recovery is maximised by a high performance integrated cooling system.
Uniquely, the second electric motor can independently recharge the battery at any time.
Additional System Improvements
Toyota has introduced a beltless engine configuration to reduce mechanical losses. The electrically controlled water pump is now only used when the vehicle's operating conditions require. Additionally, this reduces engine maintenance, as no belts require replacing.
A new engine heat management system recovers exhaust heat - which is normally wasted - to heat up the engine and interior cabin more quickly resulting in improved cold weather fuel economy and cabin comfort.
Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation reintroduces cooled exhaust gases into the engine for better efficiency.
