Why Plug-in Hybrid?

Refuel as usual

Refuelling your Plug-in Hybrid is easy. Top up with petrol as normal at filling stations to drive the combustion engine.

Easy charging

A wallbox will help deliver fast and hassle-free charging at home. You can also charge your Toyota Plug-in Hybrid at home from a standard power supply. And on the move you can use the public charging network.

Lower emissions

With the ability to travel further than Hybrids on electric power alone, Toyota’s Plug-in Hybrid cars can cover local trips in EV mode (up to 71km in Prius-In Hybrid), using no fuel and with no tailpipe emissions.§ § Emissions may be associated with other aspects of the car’s life cycle, such as tyre and brake wear.

How do they work?

Plug-in Hybrids take the convenience of a self-charging Hybrid and add the option to charge and to drive further in electric-only EV mode, thanks to a bigger battery. To understand more, click the animations to see how our Plug-in Hybrids work.
  • Charging and Refuelling

Fill the tank at a fuel station as you normally would. With a Plug-in Hybrid you can also charge the battery, to increase your electric-only driving range and overall efficiency. Charge at home or at a public charger.

  • The battery powers the electric motor, turning the wheels and driving the vehicle forward.

  • The petrol engine boosts power and range over long distances while also charging the battery.

Prius Plug-In Hybrid

The Prius Plug-In Hybrid was recognised by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy as the "Greenest" Car. The ACEEE’s ratings take a “cradle to grave” approach to the impact a given model has on the environment.

FAQS

Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles incorporate similar technology – but with a key difference. Both switch seamlessly between two power sources; an efficient petrol engine and an electric powertrain comprising a battery and one or more electric motors. However, Plug-in Hybrids feature a higher capacity battery to deliver greater electric performance and electric-only range in EV mode.

Toyota’s Plug-in Hybrids feature bigger batteries than Hybrid cars, giving them the capability to cover local trips on electric power alone in EV mode. Should the battery run low during longer drives, Toyota’s Plug-in Hybrids seamlessly switch to running on combined petrol and electric power, recharging the battery as you drive to get you to your destination. Explore the individual model pages of Toyota’s Plug-in Hybrids to find out more about their range.

There are several ways to recharge a Plug-in Hybrid. Plugging in to your domestic power supply is easy and makes overnight charging convenient and, in many cases, highly economical. For optimum speed, the combination of a dedicated cable and a wallbox unit will return a full charge in just a couple of hours – a comparable time to some mobile phones.

Plug-in Hybrids can save you money in many ways. Regular charging will significantly reduce your fuel consumption, and Plug-in Hybrid drivers enjoy tax relief and exemption from city centre and low-emission charges in some countries.

Toyota Plug-in Hybrid batteries are engineered to last the lifetime of the car. For added peace of mind, every battery comes with a 5 year/100,000 km◊ warranty which – with an annual Hybrid Health Check – extends battery cover for up to 10 years. When a battery reaches the end of its life, Toyota’s take-back scheme ensures it is dealt with safely and responsibly.

Whichever occurs sooner.

* Combining the power of a highly-efficient petrol engine and one or more electric motors, Toyota self-charging Hybrids can charge themselves while you drive, slow down or brake. You can drive some distances in electric mode and never have to plug in or worry about battery range as the petrol engine takes over when the battery is empty.

§ Emissions may be associated with other aspects of the car’s life cycle, such as tyre and brake wear.

Whichever occurs sooner.

** An electrified car is one propelled by one or more electric motors to some extent. Some electrified cars, including Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids, also have a petrol engine. Others, like the Toyota bZ4X, are entirely electric.

§§ Availability of the products may vary by country, and local offers may be different in each market. Customers are advised to check with their local Toyota Centre.

*** Emissions may be associated with other aspects of the car’s life cycle (including its manufacture), from the production of hydrogen fuel and from day-to-day usage, such as from the tyres and brakes.
