Plug-in Hybrids have a fuel tank and a powerful battery. When the tank runs low, refuel as you would any other car. The battery can be charged easily at home, the office or on the move, and supports the petrol engine to give smooth, powerful, efficient performance.
In EV mode the motor draws energy from the battery to create electric drive for smooth and silent zero-emission progress. The rest of the time Prius blends electric and engine power for optimum performance and efficiency without range anxiety.
A powerful 2.0-litre unit with intelligent variable valve timing, new Prius’ engine drives via a Continuously Variable Transmission to boost power and range. The engine can top up the battery when the state of charge runs low.
When you lift off the accelerator, the electric motor works as a generator to top up the battery’s state of charge. This regenerative function, adjustable between three levels, also creates a useful braking effect.
With 50% more battery capacity than before, new Prius Plug-in Hybrid can travel up to 71km* on electric power alone. In urban areas, where speeds tend to be lower, this range is greater still and may be sufficient to meet your daily commuting needs without using the engine.
